Dave Reiner plays and teaches multiple fiddle styles. Twice Wisconsin State Fiddle Champion, he's also won many Northeastern contests and has written three fiddle instruction books for Mel Bay Publications, including Oldtime Fiddling across America and Anthology of Fiddle Styles. He played with Pete Anick in several bands in Wisconsin, including Bluegrass Caravan, and continued the run with Hot Off The Frets when they both had moved to Massachusetts. Dave also played with Fire on the Mountain and Southern Rail. Now, Dave's family and friends join him in the broadly-ranging Reiner Family Band, which recently recorded 52 Traditional Fiddle Tunes from Fiddle Hell, Volume 2: Played Fast and Slow. He also plays with Granite Grass, a bluegrass and Western Swing band, and sits in on fiddle with Boston Road, a band that plays bluegrass and beyond.
Dave turned the original concept of Fiddle Hell as an informal gathering of fiddlers, into a weekend fiddle camp, into a 4-day festival with 13 concerts and 450 workshops and jams for fiddle and other instruments. FH is now in its 14th year. While Dave can often be found teaching tunes, he is also very focused on giving players the hands-on knowledge and techniques to play traditional fiddle styles, from bowing patterns and chords to learning by ear and backing up a singer.
