Michelle Kaminsky fell in love with fiddle and contra dancing in high school. Since her teens, she has been fascinated by a variety of American folk music and dance traditions including Cajun, Creole/Zydeco, French Canadian, New England and Appalachian. Playing fiddle with Magnolia, The Cajun Hobos, The Saints, Dennis Stroughmatt in ‘Creole Stomp’, and the contra dance band French Roast has brought her much joy over the last thirty years.
Known for being a spirited performer and patient teacher, Michelle is passionate about teaching, including being fiddler-in-residence at the Rhode Island Fiddle Project and teaching private students in other communities. She is an active member of the RISCA teaching artist roster, and a Master Artist, and has been a Master/Apprenticeship teacher many times, as well as doing artist-in residences, and teacher training workshops. Michelle teaches Cajun Fiddle from Scratch at the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia and has directed and taught at the Cajun Music Camp/Acedemy at the Rhythm and Roots Festival for the last twelve years. When not teaching or playing, Michelle can be found whooping it up on the dance floor!
